History of the AAP

Asian Academy of Prosthodontics (AAP) was originally known as “International College of Prosthodontics, Asian Chapter. ICPAC was founded in 1994 and Professor Takao Maruyama was the first president. The founders of ICPAC were Professor Maruyama, from Kiushiu University, Professor Kenji Hiranuma of Aichi University, Professor Matsuo of Kanagawa University, Professor Yung-Soo Kim of Seoul National University, Professor Yuh-Yuan Shiau of National Taiwan University and Dr. Peter Tay from Singapore. In 1998, Dr. Maruyama called for a meeting in Japan and announced that the ICP head office did not recognize the Asian Chapter. The ICPAC was then renamed as Asian Academy of Prosthodontics (AAP) and became an independent prosthodontic association in Asia. However, when the AAP was founded, Professor Maruyama was not included as a founder of AAP.

In 1999, AAP was officially recognised when the 1st AAP meeting was held at the  Intercontinental Hotel Seoul, Korea  from April 30th to May 2nd and Professor Kim, one of the founders of both ICPAC and AAP, was the President. The theme of the conference was Influence of Implantology on Conventional Prosthodontics in Asian Region. It was held in conjunction with the 40 year anniversary meeting of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics.

The 2nd AAP biennial meeting was held at the Mandarin Hotel, Singapore on August 3-5, 2001, and Dr. Tay was the President. It was held in conjunction with the 10 th Anniversary Meeting of Prosthodontic Society of Singapore

The 3rd Biennial meeting was held Howard International Hotel, Taipei on November 14-16, 2003 in conjunction with the 16th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Prosthetic Dentistry ROC, Taiwan. Professor Shiau, also a founder member of both ICPAC and AAP was the President of this congress.

In 2003, AAP accepted Thailand as a new member country of AAP. With the invitation of Dr. Benjapote Yotnuengnit of Mahidol University, the 4th biennial meeting was held  at The Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel,  Bangkok, Thailand on August 9-11, 2005, and Dr. Benjapote became the President of AAP. The theme of the congress was “Prosthetic Dentistry in the World of Difference: “Life-long Learning”

In 2007, the 5th biennial AAP meeting was held  at Kobe Portopia Hotel, Kobe, Japan on May 18-20, and Dr. Kiyoshi Koyano of Kiushiu University was the President. In Kobe meeting, China, Malaysia and India became member countries of AAP. The theme of the congress was “Encounter A New Prosthodontics” and it was held in conjunction with the 116th Scientific Meeting of Japan Prosthodontic Society.

The 6th AAP biennial meeting was held in Seoul again on April 24-26, 2009, and Professor Sang-Wan Shin was the president. The theme of the congress was “The future of prosthodontics,clinical practice, education & research”

The 7th AAP biennial meeting was held at the Shanghai EXPO Theme Pavilion, Shanghai, China on December 28-30, 2011, and Professor Fuqiang Zhang was the president. This congress was held in conjunction with the 3rd Joint Meeting of CPS-JPS-KAP and the National Congress of the Chinese Prosthodontic Society meetings. It was co-organised by the Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital affiliatedto the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Indonesia and Sri Lanka were included as member countries of AAP at the Shanghai congress.

India hosted the 8th AAP biennial meeting in Chennai in conjunction with the 40th Indian Prosthodontic Society Conference on December 5-9, 2012, and Professor T.V.Padmanabhan was the President. The theme of the congress was “Prosthodontics: Beyond Frontiers”. It was co-organised by the Tamil Nadu Prosthodontic and Implant Society.

In 2014, the 9th AAP biennial meeting was held at Howard Civil Service International House, Taipei for the second time in the history of AAP, on Nov. 22-23, under the Presidentship of Professor Chun-Cheng Hung. The event also commemorated the 27th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Prosthetic Dentistry ROC, Taiwan At this meeting, the Philippines became the 11th member country of AAP. http://www.prosthod.org.tw/doc/mgz/17-3A/apd17-3A-2.pdf

The 10th AAP biennial meeting was held at the Royal Meridien Plaza Athenee Hotel Bangkok, Thailand on August 8-10, 2016, and Dr M.L. Theerathavaj Srithavaj was the president. The theme of the congress was “Digital solution in Prosthetic Dentistry”.

The 11th Biennial Meeting was held from 21st to 23rd September, 2018 at Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur under the presidentship of Prof. Dr Seow Liang Lin. The theme of the meeting was “Quintessential Contemporary Prosthodontics”. This congress took place in conjunction with the 8th Scientific Conference of the Malaysian Association for Prosthodontic. Two new country members were inducted namely Pakistan and Nepal.

The 12th Biennial Meeting was to be held at The Stones Hotel – Legian Bali, Bali, Indonesia from 21st to 23rd August 2020, but due to the global pandemic COVID-19, it had to be postponed.
